  Teaching Idea: Cricket & Colonization
Identifying popular sports can tell a lot about a country. For example, a country’s environment clearly plays a role: skiing is popular in snowy Sweden, sailing is popular in sunny Bahamas, etc. Some popular sports have deep cultural roots, like karate or sumo wrestling in Japan, while others are evidence of global connectivity, such as the spread of baseball and basketball from the United States. Did you know that a country’s popular sports can also say something about its colonial past?

  Focus on a U.S. State
Minnesota is known as the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, but there are as many as 12,000 lakes in the state. Where did they come from? Giant glaciers (sheets of ice) covered the state thousands of years ago. They ground down the earth and formed lake beds. When the glaciers melted, these lake beds filled with water. In total, Minnesota’s lakes have 90,000 miles (144,841 km) of shoreline. This is more than the shorelines of California, Florida, and Hawaii combined!

Here are some more interesting facts:
  • Minnesotans have one of the longest life expectancies, second only to Hawaiians, in the nation.

  • International Falls is considered the coldest place in the continental United States with an average annual temperature of 36°F (2°C).

  • Two brothers from Minneapolis invented in-line skates to practice hockey during the off-season.

  • Lake Itasca is the source of the Mississippi River, which travels 2,552 miles (4,107 km) to the Gulf of Mexico.

Agra, India

Women's Dress: As demonstrated by these visitors to the Taj Mahal, Indian women generally wear a saree (a long length of fabric draped in variations that can represent socioeconomic status and religious affiliation) or a colorful pantsuit with a knee-length shirt. Western-style clothing is common among men, but not as popular among women. Because the tomb is a Muslim holy site, visitors are requested to remove their shoes.
