The Olympic Torch Arrives in Beijing China

SIRS Leading Issues provides a topic on Human Rights. It gives students an opportunity to understand this issue in the context of the talk of possible protests directed at the Chinese by the U.S. and other countries at the games. Why is playing sports beneficial for student health?

Playing sports helps elementary students form the foundation of attitudes, habits, and skills that will keep them active and fit for a lifetime. Many schools have expanded their elementary PE programs to include a greater emphasis on lifetime individual sports such as golf, tennis, swimming, hiking, and bicycling. Encourage students to research a sport of their choice in May.

Going Nuclear

How is a nuclear weapon created and developed? What are the hazards of testing nuclear weapons? What are some of the future types of nuclear weapons being developed? Students are always interested in science topics that hold either great promise, or great disaster for their future. Assign a report of 150-200 words that focuses on the current state of nuclear weapons in 2008, and beyond.

SIRS Decades
A U.S. Middle Class in Decline

Happy 60th Birthday, Israel

Since its founding, Israel's boundaries and even its very right to exist have been subject to dispute, although Israel has signed peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and efforts are being made to reach a permanent accord with the Palestinians. In May, use eLibrary CE to research Israeli authors, history, and the current status of Arab-Israeli relations.

World Conflicts Today
Memorial Day: Remembering, Grieving

Elaina Morton shot herself on August 25, 2005. She wasn't a soldier, but many in her small Kansas community considered her death a casualty of war. They will likely think of her on Memorial Day for years to come.

Why? Because they believe that she killed herself out of grief -- grief for her husband, Ben, whom insurgents had killed three months earlier in Iraq.

Flag on Coffin of U.S. Military Solider

Read "Costs of occupation" in the Global Implications section of our exclusive WCT Iraq report (more). Then answer this essential question for critical thinking: "Why might grief caused by the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq be felt more widely than the grief felt in previous wars?"

Explore additional history-related themes inside History Happenings, our hands-on social sciences enewsletter.

Financial Meltdown 2008 & Deregulation

What are the ethics of supporting bailouts of companies who were major contributors to our present financial crisis? The Federal Reserve took historic steps to save investment bank Bear Stearns, in an effort to stop financial panic from infecting Wall Street.
